Boss GT-10 / GT-8: Using the preamp of your guitar amp with the 4 cable method

Introduction

With the 4 cable method (4cm) you can connect your Boss GT-8 /GT-10 to your guitar amp, that you can use the preamp of your guitar amp. This is especially usefull when using a good sounding tube preamp, because then you can still use it. Another advantage of the 4 cable method is that you can switch between your built-in tube preamp and the preamp models of your Boss GT-10 / GT-8. The basic requirement for the 4 cable method is that your guitar amp has an effects loop.

Wiring

  1. Wire: Guitar into the input of the Boss GT-10
  2. Wire: Effects loop send of the Boss GT-10 into the input of your guitar amp
  3. Wire: Effects loop send of the guitar amp to the effect loop return of the Boss GT-10
  4. Wire: Boss GT-10 output into the effects loop return of the guitar amp

Programming of the patch

  1. Preamp effect off
  2. External loop on

or

  1. Preamp effect on
  2. External Loop off

In the first case you will use the built-in preamp of your guitar amp. Therefore the preamp model of the Boss GT-10 is switched off . In the second case the external loop is switched off (you don't use the preamp of your amp) and the preamp model of the Boss GT-10 is used.

there is no easy way to set the levels.

If you know the preferred return level of your amp and if you have a level meter (I hope that's the correct english name) then you'll be able to set the GT's output level accordingly.

Send/Return Level

Hi, thanks for all this info. I have a GT10 and I've been playing live for over a year with it. I came across some comments about the send/return levels to reduce the "color" that the GT does. I set-up my level and Eq's values way back by ear, but I wonder if a rule of thumb or logic exist.
thanks

Thanks Arne, I had a Eureka moment last night just after I posted; with the help of my obviously much more technically minded son. I had been looking for something marked loop but as you point out it's marked send/return.
GT 10 now fully operational, I almost sold it as well, glad I didn't. Not the most user friendly manual!
Thanks for your help

Hi Douglas,

1) Boss GT-10: Pressing [MASTER/PEDAL FX] switches the external effects loop on and off.
2) Boss GT-8: Pressing [LOOP] switches the external effects loop on and off.

Thanks Arne but where do I find the setting to activate it, I have gone right through the manual but I can't find it.
I'm getting quite frustrated as I know the GT10 is a great piece ot kit but I can't get it set up properly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
